I oppose hate crimes. The crime itself should be judged, no matter a person's intentions or motives or bizarre psychological makeup.

Jared, A kid got his head cut off, mutilated and partially burned. All you have to say is something condescending and lame? I'm sure the family is touched. really.

Welcome to our judicial system luggy. Right or wrong it requires serious legislative and judicial weight to get a change like that. That law was another big weight on the gay rights side of the scale.

Not sure where the thread I wanted is, but... This will do. Kid got decapitated in Puerto Rico. 19yo. The PR being a protectorate, feds will have jurisdiction. Hate crimes bill was signed what, a week ago? Kid was out and proud, got his head cut off. Authorities are still sketchy about the application of the hate crimes standard. The activists all have their panties in a wad because the application of HC standards weren't automatic. Of course, they're failing to recognize that the crime was still committed even with the additional "protection" granted by the new law. I'd have to say, that was my point all along. The law doesn't protect us. It just makes liberals feel better about their own guilt.

RainKaid, I like your ideas, and I'm in fact in the process of implementing most of them myself. Caveats/comments. 1. I'm also moving my money to a locally owned and invested bank (a Malcolm Baldridge Quality Award winner no less!) in the interest of "keeping it local." That said, keep in mind that when the US financial house of cards truly begins to crumble, there may be NO true refuge for us normal people. That may go without saying, nonetheless... 2. Credit Cards. Wow! How is it possible that SO MANY people could get SO MUCH wrong about this subject over SO MANY years? HERE'S THE DEAL: You want ONE (1) credit card ONLY with as high a limit, at the lowest interest rate, as you will ever POSSIBLY USE, and/or have the ability to pay off. You will ALSO want this card to to be a "revolving" account, in that you want an unlimited amount of time to pay off your balance (with interest) Why? Because YOU, as the "IDEAL" credit risk, want to begin to "play the bank (just as the banks above you have attempted to play theirs, etc.)" Charge your card to the maximum possible every month and PAY IT OFF, AND YOU WILL BE GOLDEN! Gradually, begin carrying balances that you know can be paid off in a month or two as well, and you can imagine the rest. Yeah, you DO need a steady income stream, but hey, this IS America. Default outright or change your address if you can't keep up. 3. Stock Market? Are you serious? Christ, even Nobama's not THAT stupid these days I suspect. Stock Market=Casino Capitalism in my mind, without the minimal consumer protection at that. 4. Unions? Yeah. Good luck. 5. Take care of you and yours? ABSOLUTELY! Probably the ONLY ADVICE that truly matters. DaN

I think it would be possible to get oneself legally classified as an "insular minority" (such as strict Amish) thereby having the (controversial) doctrine of substantive due process block you from much of the legal world. Not to the extent claimed by those links though, and I wouldn't want to try to establish the "insular minority" bit. Becoming a person without a country though... Well, you wouldn't be a citizen but it looks more workable although difficult. Not a lawyer though, so again get competent legal advice.

Correction: the judiciary has not completely invalidated the Dred Scott case. I see a "supreme court doctrine of 'substantive due process'" whose wording makes my head hurt and can be traced to that decision. I do not think it can be used in a way to build the argument you propose however. I'm still looking, but I don't see a constitutional argument for you yet.

ToriW, Do you realize that at least one of your sources is basing it's logic off the infamous Dred Scott case where Chief Justice Taney said that BLACKS were second class citizens not full Citizens? A case since invalidated by Executive, legislative, and judicial branches and constitutional amendments. Numerous other court cases have stated there is no such thing as different classes of citizens and those 1900's precedents your sources mention seem to relate to the black codes. I believe it is possible to become sovereign, but I do not think you can do that without repudiating your citizenship. I think you need to confer with competent legal advisors if you want to continue down that route. Certain aspects of what you posted I find highly interesting, but the basic premise of differing types of citizenship seems flawed.

I like ToriW's idea better. Lets all be sovereign entities. ToriW, how do we do that? What do I do when the local sheriffs come to throw my family out of our own home?

hi Tori Always good to see you post. I'm sorry if the recession has hurt you especially hard. Your post reminded me of this advice from Michael Moore (we're trying to do most of these things as best we can) FIVE THINGS WE SHOULD DO TO PROTECT OURSELVES AND OUR LOVED ONES UNTIL WE GET THROUGH THIS MESS: 1. Take your money out of your bank if it took bailout money and place it in a locally-owned bank or, preferably, a credit union. 2. Get rid of all your credit cards but one -- the kind where you have to pay up at the end of the month or you lose your card. 3. Do not invest in the stock market. If you have any extra cash, put it away in a savings account or, if you can, pay down on your mortgage so you can own your home as soon as possible. You can also buy very safe government savings bonds or T-bills. Or just buy your mother some flowers. 4. Unionize your workplace so that you and your coworkers have a say in how your business is run. Here's how to do it (more info here). Nothing is more American than democracy, and democracy shouldn't be checked at the door when you enter your workplace. Another way to Americanize your workplace is to turn your business into a worker-owned cooperative. You are not a wage slave. You are a free person, and you giving up eight hours of your life every day to someone else is to be properly compensated and respected. 5. Take care of yourself and your family. Sorry to go all Oprah on you, but she's right: Find a place of peace in your life and make the choice to be around people who are not full of negativity and cynicism. Look for those who nurture and love. Turn off the TV and the Blackberry and go for a 30-minute walk every day. Eat fruits and vegetables and cut down on anything that has sugar, high fructose corn syrup, white flour or too much sodium (salt) in it (and, as Michael Pollan says, "Eat (real) food, not too much, mostly plants"). Get seven hours of sleep each night and take the time to read a book a month. I know this sounds like I've turned into your grandma, but, dammit, take a good hard look at Granny -- she's fit, she's rested and she knows the names of both of her U.S. Senators without having to Google them. We might do well to listen to her. If we don't put our own "oxygen mask" on first (as they say on the airplane), we will be of no use to the rest of the nation in enacting any of this action plan! I'm sure there are many other ideas you can come up with on how we can build this movement. Get creative. Think outside the politics-as-usual box. BE SUBVERSIVE! Think of that local action no one else has tried. Behave as if your life depended on it. Be bold! Try doing something with reckless abandon. It may just liberate you and your community and your nation. And when you act, send me your stories, your photos and your video -- and be sure to post your ideas in the comments beneath this letter on my site so they can be shared with millions. C'mon people -- we can do this! I expect nothing less of all of you, my true and trusted fellow travelers! http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/mikes-letter/michael-moores-action-plan-15-things-every-american-can-do-right-now

My feelings are not obvious A better question may be WHAT am I going to do about that? I am working toward my goal of being out from under.... What are you doing? I've been hit hard by a lot of this...and the market will crash again because it's being inflated with no back up...the next crash will break USA. But if a person is not in the system they won't be touched by their falling. There are a few things one can do a couple are: Apply and work toward becoming a sovereign entity/citizen (on original SS card - it states you are entitled to an UNSAID amount of funds WHY? because your birth certificate has been bought and sold on Market since birth and the money and interest from that is sitting in one of these offshore accounts..Once completed you get free rents utilities etc and so on...it's like being a diplomat and you are IMMUNE to a few other things as well) http://www.civil-liberties.com/pages/art1.html http://discharge-debt.com/id73.htm http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis http://www.packetstormsecurity.org/poisonpen/govtxts/adler-2.txt this isn't easy to do - to complete the sovereignty but it has and can be done.. --or just disappear. -- Edited by ToriW at 11/18/2009 10:52 AM PST Tax codes are voluntary and Wesley Snipes is being held illegally and so is anyone else under a federal tax evasion case...WHAT I dont' agree with is the DOUBLE STANDARD...let him go if you let these companies and people go -- Edited by ToriW at 11/18/2009 10:54 AM PST

ToriW, Our savings evaporated but the financiers continue to reap even bigger bonus. Our government gave them $$$ to take even more of your $$$. How do you feel about that? -- Edited by infoseek at 11/18/2009 10:27 AM PST
