I enjoyed it more than I did Twilight. Twilight, IMHO, sucked because the main actors sucked. I wanted to smack KStew upside the head and tell her that it won't kill her to smile...or act the least bit happy. In NM, that look worked for her because she was supposed to act depressed. I don't have high hopes for her acting in the next movie. And I have no idea what to expect from RPat in the next one because he wasn't in NM enough to really judge how much he's grown as an actor since Twilight.
Although I enjoyed the movie, I'd have to agree that it wasn't excellent. It was fun to see. I enjoyed the little laughs we were given. Overall, out of 5 stars, I'd probably give it a 3.5ish....

See, to me, Ryan needs a little bit more body fat. just a little. Taylor has Ryan beat in my book. I think the body build has to do with it too. I love really broad, strong shoulders on a man. And Taylor is broader than Ryan. I feel so dirty for oogling a 17 yr old's body. :/ But good lord!

Good evening, all!
I also braved the crowds last night to see the midnight showing of New Moon. It was the first time I've gone to a midnight showing of any movie. And I think the only time I really almost regretted it was when i drove past a thermometer on the way to the theater and it said -11 degrees. Brr! I got to the theater only about an hour before the show was set to begin. I had friends at the theater waiting on me and although they only arrived a few minutes before me, somehow we were able to get back row seats. SO glad we didn't have to sit up front.
I was looking forward to this movie because I knew it had a different director, with more experience than the director of Twilight. And I'll have to agree with latbfan. I think Chris Weitz did a great job. Overall, I did enjoy the movie although like latbfan said, the movie made a lot more sense if you'd read the book.
I still think that KStew really sucks as an actress. Her performance in this movie was tolerable because she was supposed to act depressed. It's like she had the same expression on her face the entire movie. And that expression happens to be the same expression that she wore for Twilight. It doesn't matter if she's saying, "I love you Edward," or "Man, I stepped in dog poo," her expression would be the same. But because of what's going on in this book, it worked.
I LOVED the funny lines. I loved the playful jabs between Alice and Jacob in the books and I'm glad they made it into the film. And it wasn't just their lines, it was little funny things throughout the movie.

I enjoyed. Although I must admit, I think it should be against the law for a body like Taylor Lautner's to be on an underage boy. Good lord is all I can say.

Good afternoon peeps:

Thank you DJ and latbfan for the New Moon reviews, it is hyping up my anticipation for tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. when I get to see the movie... (tickets pre-purchased). Very glad to know that you guys enjoyed the show because I trust your judgment and I am a little relieved.

Hello Piper! *Waves*

I am late getting here because I got up at the crack of dawn to go on a work related trip. On my lunch break now. Saw that there is an extensive interview with Allen Hyde posted on the Vault, but have not had time to read it yet.

RE: the make-up in New Moon: why is it so difficult to make actors look pale without being chalky? I know there were times during the season when it looked like Eric and Bill would have looked more appropriate with a powdered wig in a show about the French Revolution, as they were quite fond of the chalky look during that time period. It looks bad.

Finally, I read the Rolling Stone review of New Moon by Peter Travers who didn't like the movie, stating that ever since he was glamoured by TB, the Twilight series has no teeth. I found that amusing.

Happy Friday, peeps.

Good afternoon, everyone --

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIRXhSV0c20&feature=related

For all of you aboard the Railcar interested in music; here is a 'homespun' video of my Old Time Appalachian/Southern music group known as FOB (Friends of Banjo) taken at our jam last weekend. They are playing the very popular (esp in the Civil War) tune Soldier's Joy. Note that the older gentleman (with the copious CW-style beard) is playing his fiddle on his lap in the authentic, old Mountain style. Neither my twin sister nor I were able to attend this gathering, as we were down in the Colonial Williamsburg/Historic Triangle area visiting my ailing Grandmother (and riding out the Nor'easter). We're both still 'wet behind the ears' cubs and too inexperienced to fully join in the flow, anyway. I have to think about it too much, and to jam this way the tunes must be totally instinctive -- as nothing is written down (you will notice that there is never any sheet music. It's primarily an oral tradition). However, this gives you a good idea of what one of our typical jams is like. Some of them are much larger, with musicians coming from all over West Virginia, Maryland, DC, and Virginia. In its own unique way, this historic, authentic music is the most anti-consumer, hip, truly ALT-music out there (which is why so many punks and grungesters love it). It's real. It's raw (especially the plaintive Murderin' Ballads). It's totally homemade. And it endures. No professionals here... just friends and neighbors getting together for good times and tunes. You do not simply throw money to a corporate label, download it on Itunes, and then passively listen. You create. You participate. You make it yourself. It can be as fast and edgy or as slow and mournful as you wish. Now all we needed was some flatfoot cloggin' and either a ballad singer or some Sacred Harp. This is what William T. Compton would've listened and danced to in his human life.

And here's Sugar Baby (my apologies for the poor sound quality; but it is enough to get the idea):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gu7Kjn-GXzg&feature=channel

Fulvia and I both adore this film; but to those of you who love music and have not seen Songcatcher, get thee hence immediately to Netflix and add it to your queue. Below is a scene of the great Iris DeMent singing the ballad Pretty Saro:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6ArylRGWME

And now for something completely different: I read the first two or so books in the Outlander series many years ago and remember quite enjoying them. Jamie was a wonderfully written, warm, vibrant character and life in the Scottish Highlands leaps off of the page. A great, rollicking read.

I hope that Latbfan enjoys her hard-earned weekend away. Ol' Miss v LSU is one of the greatest rivalries in college football, and both the tailgating and the game itself should be superb. I fully expect both the bourbon and the blood to flow (God, I hope so!). I intend to watch it on Saturday, and you know that's saying alot when I actually carve time out of my schedule to watch American football. Arsenal also play Sunderland on Saturday; but I hope to catch both games (that's what the trusty DVR is for, is it not?).

Piperpals: I've greatly missed you, Kamerad.

"I will come back... later". Until then, keep calm and carry on.

Good morning, everyone, and a big WAVE to all our long-lost friends! I, too, braved the crowds for the midnight showing of New Moon. Before I begin my "official two cents", I just want to say how irritating it was to arrive at the theater to discover that not only had they sold out showings of Twilight, starting at 9:00, but they'd sold out the movie showing before that. The only seats available, though we arrived at 10:30, were in the very front. *groan* And so help me, there was a squealer right behind me. Quite literally, every single time someone went shirtless (and that's quite often), she squealed. I was ready to kill kill kill. I suppose that's part of the fun of going opening night, the excitement, etc. But it was very different than my midnight Harry Potter experiences, which have both been immensely pleasurable. I'm not quite sure what it was that was different, but something... *shrugs* Maybe some sleep will help me articulate better.

New Moon Spoilers

First, the things that I liked:

As Dumplin' said, I was pleased with the choice of director. I know The Golden Compass tanked, but I thought he did a good job with a difficult adaptation, and he did a good job with New Moon, to a certain extent (see below for dislikes). The werewolf effects were really well-done. The fight sequences were fabulous. The final scene with Bella running through the crowd to stop Edward was visually very lovely. Given the source material, which is essentially Bella in pieces for nearly a year, he did well.

Again, I agree with Dumplin' regarding the humans. :) Charlie, especially, was fabulous. I really liked him in Twilight, but he's even better in NM. You can really see/feel his pain and helplessness when Bella is suffering.

Despite the sadness of the plot, there are some really funny lines, which help break up the doom-and-gloom. I laughed out loud a couple of times, and I was quite moved at times too. Like with Twilight, it felt emotionally authentic to me.

KS as Bella is wonderful. I think her portrayal of Bella is stronger somehow than the Bella in the book, but she did a great job. I never felt her emptiness as strongly as I did when I was reading. In the book, she loves Jacob, but I never felt like she'd be happy with him. She says she wouldn't be, but I felt otherwise. *shrugs* She writes emails to Alice throughout the film (that are always returned, but she writes them anyway), and I really liked that addition to the book.

The movie was more physical than the book. You get to see the pack fight Laurant. You get to see Victoria hunting. The final scene with the Volturi in the book is just Jane torturing Edward's mind, but there's an all-out fight. I'm sure those bits are bones thrown to all the husbands and boyfriends, but I liked it.

Speaking of the Volturi, Aros was so right-on. The super enthusiastic, creepy, everything... Oh my gosh. SO right on. He was small, but memorable.

They did a really nice job showing the difference between the Cullens and the pack, the dichotomy between Bella's two loves, the two different paths her life could take. The movie is full of half-naked, wet men... But I could live with that. :) After so many years of mostly naked women on screen, it's kind-of nice to have the roles switched and the guys be the objects of sex and desire.

Things I Didn't Like:

If you haven't read the books, you will be more lost than with Twilight. I suppose they assume that most viewers will have read the books. Like with the Harry Potter adaptations, there's just too much information to smash into a film, but I just don't like it when they do it. The film should be able to stand on its own, in my opinion. They especially cut back on pack information, which I would've liked. And we still don't see what Edward's up to, not even glimpses.

The cinematography was over-the-top at times. Please remember I was in the front, so maybe if seated at a normal distance it wouldn't have felt so overwhelming at times. I realize that he had to how the passing of a lot of time, but I grew tired of the montages and circular shots. I was very aware of the camera, and at least for a first-viewing, such technicalities are distracting. I want to just soak it all in and not notice those finer points until a later viewing (or third, even). Again, this is just my opinion, but I just don't like it when directors are so present.

And while on the subject of technical details, the make-up was awful. What is it with pasty vampires? With all the vampire films, you'd think they'd find a way to make them look better. How can you make the Cullens look bad? Seriously, that's a feat. Rosalie, especially, looked just dreadful. And Alice's wardrobe made her look frumpy. Alice should never, ever be anywhere close to frumpy. Ever. And Victoria's hair was way over-the-top in terms of color. It was so beautiful in the first film, but it's this strange color now. And the eyes... In the first film, their eyes were this neat burgundy color, but now they're glowing red. RED red. It's stupid. The Cullens' eyes are more weird too. It comes off almost cartoonish, which it didn't in the first film.

The whole film was colored differently than Twilight. (And again, I wish I hadn't noticed things like color during a first viewing.) Twilight was very muted, with lots of greens and grays and blues. This one is much more vibrant, and for whatever reason, I was quite aware of the colors, and I didn't like it. Cartoonish, again. It just felt less real.

We see one of Alice's visions... Oh my goodness. I burst into laughter, and I'm fairly certain absurdity wasn't what they were going for. When y'all see it, you'll know just what I'm talking about. Seriously? *rolls eyes/shakes head*

Edward actually does break the law. In the book, Bella stops him before he steps into the sun. He does, though, and someone sees. So his claims of not having done anything really don't make much sense.

Bella and Edward in Italy and Bella and Alice on the plane were scenes I really enjoyed in the book, and I was saddened that they were cut. In the book, Bella thinks Edward's about to leave at any second, and there's a desperation and giddiness, despite the danger of the Volturi. That just isn't the case.

I missed Felix winking at her while threatening to kill her, for some reason. I liked that about him. It was disturbing and scary.

Actually, none of the dangers seemed as dangerous as they did in the book. The biggest danger, that I could see, was spontaneous combustion from all the almost-touches and almost-kisses. Those kids are going to burst into flame for sure. :)

All in all, it was fun. It wasn't worth feeling as lousy as I do at the moment, though, and that's sad. Harry Potter was worth it. Reading the books in a marathon was worth it. This, I could've waited a few days for the theater to empty a bit...

That said, I'll probably be going again in the next couple of weeks, this time getting a seat not so close to the screen.

Yes yes yes yes
Sorry I love that series and am waiting for things to slow down so I can read the new one, An Echo in the Bone. This series was the first I read with any type of "fantasy" involved and the history tied around it is wonderful. I do believe Jamie and Claire will tie you up as much as Edward and Bella and maybe even Sookie and Bill. If you would like ot know more before you invest yourself, please do not hesitate to ask.

Hi dear friends...I know I have been MIA for far too long and I hate that I have missed out on so much. I made myself sit down tonight and take a few minutes to share some thoughts as I have just returned from the midnight showing of New Moon and I know a few passengers are fans.

*****Possible New Moon Spoiler*****

I am thoroughly overjoyed with New Moon. IMO Chris Weitz could not have done a better job and kudos to Melissa Rosenburg (sp?) I loved it. It was true to the book and had some wonderful cinematography. I laughed quite a bit and cried quite a bit too and at the end was aching for Jacob Black. I was emotionally invested in this movie, which is not something I can say about Twilight. Several characters, despite limited screen time, stole some scenes with one line. "Humans" can top that list. I must say I do think Jasper has one of the best lines of the movie and the ending left the whole theater in one loud "NO"
Anyway I am sure some sleep might bring further analysis and more praise, but I want the Twilight fans on board to know I truly do not think they will be disappointed.

Night all for now

Piperpals creeps into the quiet railcar and carefully puts a dark chocolate torte with warm raspberry syrup on the table. Next to the torte she places a carafe of french roast coffee.

Have a great evening, everyone.

Sorry I have to be MIA so much -- I am just swamped with the coming holiday season performances, end of the semester grading/performances, and all the church prep for this season.

I do want to write fanfic when you do the RR on Lorena, though!

I believe it was mentioned somewhere on here not long ago. The Outlander series was also recommended to me but I have yet to check it out. Maybe it was in the What Are You Reading thread? Can't remember for sure.
And I agree about reading. As long as it's compelling and keeps me interested, I'll read it.

I have just finished reading your latest chapter, (half a chapter), on your fan fiction and loved it. What I really enjoyed, and this is no surprise, that by creating this back story for Eric and Bill, you have fleshed out more of their character. The interaction that they have while Eric is taking his bath at Bill's house plumbs the depths of their relationship and adds so much more to the overall story. I fear that now I have so incorporated their back story into my understanding of TB, that I am going to be confused when I watch the show and have to remember that Bill and Eric have not, in fact, known each other a hundred years. It is remarkably well done.
